80's Rail
Welcome
Welcome to the railway photographic archive site of Dennis Taylor. The photo's were mostly taken between 1984 and 1989, recording the everyday operations of the British Rail system. If it had anything to do with the railway - motive power, rolling stock, depots or whatever - it was recorded on film. My collection consists of over 35,000 photographs (mainly black & white) and the aim is to upload as many different subjects as possible - so it's going take some time!

Equipment: the majority of the black & white pictures were taken on Kodak Tri-X, using a Bronica ETR-S 6x4.5cm SLR camera. Colour pictures were taken on Kodak Ektachrome using a Nikon FE 35mm SLR. All processing was carried out by myself.

Scanning:
Print scans from available 8 x 5" prints using an Epson Perfection 4180 photo scanner at 400dpi.
35mm B&W & transparency film using a Plustek 7300 film scanner at 1800dpi.
Medium format B&W negatives using a Epson Perfection V500 photo scanner at 1200dpi.
All images are edited using Photoshop Elements 7.0 and are between 200 & 300kb each.

Please feel free to view photographs on a 'personal use' basis (click on photo for full sized image). However, if you would like to use any photograph commercially, let me know. Downloaded photographs may not be passed onto third parties without prior permission. Fees will be applicable and charged where deemed necessary.

Your comments are always welcome, particularly to add extra information, but I cannot enter into prolonged dialogue as this will delay future uploading.

I’ll also be posting a few more up to date pictures from more recent photographic opportunities. Current equipment is a Nikon D80 (and a Nikon 4500 and 8700), but it’s mainly pointed at wildlife these days!

Thanks for viewing and enjoy the nostalgia trip.
What is there to see...?
Looking for something in particular? All pictures are titled by ‘what, where & when’ and sometimes include a ‘why’.

I’ve tried to file all the pictures in a logical sequence. The collections are organised in the following order:

Locomotive classes : 03 to 91
DEMU classes : 201 to 210
DMU classes : 101 to 158
EMU AC classes : 302 to 319
EMU DC classes : 405 to 489
EMU DC classes : 501 to 508
Coaching Stock : NPCCS & PCCS
Track Machines
Wagons in TOPS code type order
Works : BREL workshops

You will also find other various collections included (interspersed after EMU in alphabetical order).

Within each collection, photos are in order by numerical TOPS code. DEMUs, EMUs and second generation DMUs are in set number order. Locomotives, first generation DMUs, coaching stock and track machines are by vehicle number. Wagons are by TOPS code.

If you are looking for a specific thing, be it number, location or date, please use the search box.

All collections will be added to as scanning progresses.
Hopefully, the smaller collections will build up as time goes on.

Print scans will be replaced with better quality film scans as work progresses.

Any Ideas ?? (22 images) New
A collection of photos (mostly wagons) that I cannot identify 100%. If you can help by saying which collection they should go under, I would appreciate your help!
Class 03 (38 images)
BR's small shunter that was in it's final years. Although dotted around the country, I managed to get photographs before they were all withdrawn.
Class 07 (5 images)
One of the 'modernisation plan' shunters. A single example remained with BR as a stationary generator at Eastleigh Works
Class 08 (317 images) Updated
They're everywhere and anywhere and 'shunter hunting' added another dimension to trainspotting! Call them Gronks or Jockos, they were often found in the remotest of places.
Class 09 (28 images)
Super Gronks! Mainly found down south, but some eventually drifted to the north.
Class 13 (8 images)
The future of goods movement was to revolve around integration of both road and rail transport. Large freight yards that were built became white elephants. To shunt at Tinsley, with it's 'hump', the master and slave class 13 was introduced.
Class 15 (5 images)
Type 1 locomotive not chosen for main production. Four survived converted as non propelled electric train heating units.
Class 20 (274 images) Updated
An oversized shunter? Usually seen in pairs, cabs to the outer ends so the driver could see where he was going! An everyday workhorse that even found it's way onto scheduled passenger workings.
Class 25 (112 images)
The Derby Sulzers, or rats. I was always happy when one of these turned up. Unfortunately, one of their claims to fame was the 3 high stack in Vic Berry's scrapyard.
Class 26 (67 images)
Over the border to Scotland in search of the McRats - the Birmingham Sulzers.
Class 27 (62 images)
The other McRats - but serving out their final days.
Class 31 (307 images) Updated
Brush type 2's. A common sight around the Leicester area and used on both passenger and freight workings. Pity they were not blessed with good looks - no wonder they were called 'Gargoyles'!
Class 33 (176 images)
The Crompton's - 33/1's worked with the 4TC's and 33/2 "slim Jim's" on the Hastings limited clearance lines. Although primarily a southern engine, they did appear further north.
Class 37 (312 images)
A numerous class with lots of variations. Not being common around the Leicester area, they eluded me at first, but as I travelled around, you couldn't avoid them!
Class 40 (53 images)
The whistlers. I just managed to get pictures before they were all withdrawn from service.
Class 43 HST (322 images)
Class 43, 253/254 or HST's - were they locos or a DEMU? The most successful BR design and still running today. Call them flying bananas or trams, they were all too often ignored.
Class 45 (269 images) Updated
The Peaks - a common sight on the Midland main line, but the HST's took away their main passenger duties.
Class 46 (26 images)
A class 45 with Brush generator and traction motors. Sadly by this time, they were mainly seen in a scrap line.
Class 47 (704 images) Updated
The Brush type 4's. Very numerous, plenty of sub types and found everywhere. Probably the best design BR commissioned into service and it looked good as well.
Class 50 (86 images)
Hoovers - the stalwarts of the Western Region.
Class 55 (5 images)
The Deltics. All withdrawn from revenue service and entering the world of preservation.
Class 56 (145 images) Updated
Grids - the first 30 were built in Romania
Class 58 (88 images) Updated
Eggtimers - they were being built and entering traffic during this period. Mainly used on coal merry go rounds.
Class 59 (11 images)
Those awful imports from the USA! Foster Yeoman had foresight though. The forerunner to a common sight these days.
Class 73 (117 images) Updated
The electro diesels (ED's). A welcome sight when surrounded by SR EMU's.
Class 81 (13 images)
AL1's - the first batch of 25kv electric locos and built by Birmingham RC&W for the newly electrified London Midland network.
Class 82 / 83 / 84 (5 images)
AL2, AL3 & AL4's. All withdrawn from revenue service and due for scrapping. One loco remained in departmental service.
Class 85 (48 images)
The AL5's - built by BR at Doncaster
Class 86 (208 images)
The most numerous electric loco and plenty of sub groups and liveries
Class 87 (92 images)
A fleet of 36 locos built in 1973. Easily recognisable by only having 2 front windows
Class 90 (14 images)
The 90's were being built at this time. And they really did look like a Skoda
Class 91 (14 images)
Built for the East Coast Main Line electrification program. Sharp at one end, blunt at the other. 1988 saw them on test runs and their introduction to passenger services.
Class 97 Departmental and BREL Locos (8 images)
Departmental locomotives numbered in the 97xxx series and shunting locomotives found at BREL works. Locomotives renumbered from main TOPS classes (eg 25's, 40's, etc.) will be found under their own class collection.
DEMU Class 201, 202 & 203 (53 images)
The Hastings DEMU's, with their narrow bodies. Their main withdrawal was in May 1985, when the tunnel lines were singled and normal EMU stock took their place.
DEMU Class 204 (31 images)
The 3T thumpers. Four reformed 3 car sets, the centre cars were actually inoperative driving trailers
DEMU Class 205 (58 images)
The 3H 'Hampshire' thumpers - the most numerous DEMU class
DEMU Class 207 (22 images)
The 3D units with their up to date glass fibre fronts, built for the Oxted line
DEMU Class 210 (4 images)
Prototype units built in 1981 - a 3 car & a 4 car set.
DMU Class 100 (11 images)
During the late 80's, these were hen's teeth. Just one remained in revenue service, along with a departmental unit.
DMU Class 101 (377 images) Updated
The Metro-Cammell built unit could be seen just about everywhere. Those aluminium window frames were instantly recognisable.
DMU Class 104 (68 images)
The Birmingham RC&W first generation DMU.
DMU Class 105 (59 images)
Cravens built 2 car DMU. I never did see one in blue/grey livery.
DMU Class 107 (58 images)
The 107's were all based up in Scotland. On my first trips across the border, most had been stored out of service with mechanical faults. However, they returned back into service after repairs and most of the shots here are from that period.
DMU Class 108 (145 images)
The Derby lightweights. Over 300 sets were built and if you were lucky, you might just see a 4 car set
DMU Class 110 (37 images)
The Calder Valley units. They never really strayed from their home patch of Yorkshire.
DMU Class 111 (24 images)
Basically the same as a 101, but more powerful. Some were converted to 'half motor'
DMU Class 114 (93 images)
The Derby heavyweights. Mainly seen around the Lincolnshire & South Yorkshire areas
DMU Class 115 (37 images)
Originally dedicated to running out of Marylebone, individual trailers could be found based at Tyseley

Derby high density units and the most numerous

High density units built by Pressed Steel. Mostly found working out of Paddington and around Reading and Oxford

The Pressed Steel built 'bubble cars', mainly seen on the western region
DMU Class 122 (18 images)

DMU Class 123 (7 images)
Swindon built Inter-City units. All withdrawn and bound to the scrap lines.
DMU Class 124 (8 images)
The Trans-Pennine units. Withdrawn in the mid 80's. I always thought these were the best looking first generation DMU's
DMU Class 127 (35 images)
Originally 4 car sets on the Bed-Pan services, they were redundant after electrification in 1983. Many of the trailers went to Tyseley for reuse and several power cars were converted into dedicated parcels units.
DMU Class 128 (30 images)
Those rather cute little parcels units. A pity that none were to enter into preservation.
DMU Class 140 (10 images)
Mate a bus body with a wagon chassis and what do you get? You can make up your own mind, but it wasn't blessed with good looks. A prototype unit that survived into preservation.
DMU Class 141 (19 images)
A Leyland National bus on rail tracks. Seemed like a good idea....
DMU Class 142 (93 images)

DMU Class 143 (26 images)

DMU Class 150/1 & 150/2 (121 images)

DMU Class 151 (18 images)
Prototype second generation DMU built by Metro-Cammell. Unfortunately not chosen for production.

EMU Class 302 (37 images)
Used on the Fenchurch St to Shoeburyness & Tilbury lines.
EMU Class 303 (132 images)

Mainly found around Manchester, Crewe and Birmingham.
EMU Class 305 (24 images)
Mainly found working out of Liverpool Street
EMU Class 306 (15 images)

Shirebrook Station signal box, 21st March 1987
Update 24th July 2010
Scanning is now just past a quarter of all my negatives, so still a way to go yet!

Some collections are now getting large, so I think there's a bit of 'maintenance' to do. So over the coming months, some of the collections will be split up to help viewing.

Snowploughs now have their own collection (was part of Track Machines) and other collections that will be first to be broken down into more definitive groups will be coaching stock.

Apologies to those who have posted links in forum threads.
