 | | Any Ideas ?? (22 images)
A collection of photos (mostly wagons) that I cannot identify 100%. If you can help by saying which collection they should go under, I would appreciate your help!
 | | Class 03 (38 images)
BR's small shunter that was in it's final years. Although dotted around the country, I managed to get photographs before they were all withdrawn.
 | | Class 07 (5 images)
One of the 'modernisation plan' shunters. A single example remained with BR as a stationary generator at Eastleigh Works
 | | Class 08 (317 images)
They're everywhere and anywhere and 'shunter hunting' added another dimension to trainspotting! Call them Gronks or Jockos, they were often found in the remotest of places.
 | | Class 09 (28 images)
Super Gronks! Mainly found down south, but some eventually drifted to the north.
 | | Class 13 (8 images)
The future of goods movement was to revolve around integration of both road and rail transport. Large freight yards that were built became white elephants. To shunt at Tinsley, with it's 'hump', the master and slave class 13 was introduced.
 | | Class 15 (5 images)
Type 1 locomotive not chosen for main production. Four survived converted as non propelled electric train heating units.
 | | Class 20 (274 images)
An oversized shunter? Usually seen in pairs, cabs to the outer ends so the driver could see where he was going! An everyday workhorse that even found it's way onto scheduled passenger workings.
 | | Class 25 (112 images)
The Derby Sulzers, or rats. I was always happy when one of these turned up. Unfortunately, one of their claims to fame was the 3 high stack in Vic Berry's scrapyard.
 | | Class 26 (67 images)
Over the border to Scotland in search of the McRats - the Birmingham Sulzers.
 | | Class 27 (62 images)
The other McRats - but serving out their final days.
 | | Class 31 (307 images)
Brush type 2's. A common sight around the Leicester area and used on both passenger and freight workings. Pity they were not blessed with good looks - no wonder they were called 'Gargoyles'!
 | | Class 33 (176 images)
The Crompton's - 33/1's worked with the 4TC's and 33/2 "slim Jim's" on the Hastings limited clearance lines. Although primarily a southern engine, they did appear further north.
 | | Class 37 (312 images)
A numerous class with lots of variations. Not being common around the Leicester area, they eluded me at first, but as I travelled around, you couldn't avoid them!
 | | Class 40 (53 images)
The whistlers. I just managed to get pictures before they were all withdrawn from service.
 | | Class 43 HST (322 images)
Class 43, 253/254 or HST's - were they locos or a DEMU? The most successful BR design and still running today. Call them flying bananas or trams, they were all too often ignored.
 | | Class 45 (269 images)
The Peaks - a common sight on the Midland main line, but the HST's took away their main passenger duties.
 | | Class 46 (26 images)
A class 45 with Brush generator and traction motors. Sadly by this time, they were mainly seen in a scrap line.
 | | Class 47 (704 images)
The Brush type 4's. Very numerous, plenty of sub types and found everywhere. Probably the best design BR commissioned into service and it looked good as well.
 | | Class 50 (86 images)
Hoovers - the stalwarts of the Western Region.
 | | Class 55 (5 images)
The Deltics. All withdrawn from revenue service and entering the world of preservation.
 | | Class 56 (145 images)
Grids - the first 30 were built in Romania
 | | Class 58 (88 images)
Eggtimers - they were being built and entering traffic during this period. Mainly used on coal merry go rounds.
 | | Class 59 (11 images)
Those awful imports from the USA! Foster Yeoman had foresight though. The forerunner to a common sight these days.
 | | Class 73 (117 images)
The electro diesels (ED's). A welcome sight when surrounded by SR EMU's.
 | | Class 81 (13 images)
AL1's - the first batch of 25kv electric locos and built by Birmingham RC&W for the newly electrified London Midland network.
 | | Class 82 / 83 / 84 (5 images)
AL2, AL3 & AL4's. All withdrawn from revenue service and due for scrapping. One loco remained in departmental service.
 | | Class 85 (48 images)
The AL5's - built by BR at Doncaster
 | | Class 86 (208 images)
The most numerous electric loco and plenty of sub groups and liveries
 | | Class 87 (92 images)
A fleet of 36 locos built in 1973. Easily recognisable by only having 2 front windows
 | | Class 90 (14 images)
The 90's were being built at this time. And they really did look like a Skoda
 | | Class 91 (14 images)
Built for the East Coast Main Line electrification program. Sharp at one end, blunt at the other. 1988 saw them on test runs and their introduction to passenger services.
 | | Class 97 Departmental and BREL Locos (8 images)
Departmental locomotives numbered in the 97xxx series and shunting locomotives found at BREL works. Locomotives renumbered from main TOPS classes (eg 25's, 40's, etc.) will be found under their own class collection.
 | | DEMU Class 201, 202 & 203 (53 images)
The Hastings DEMU's, with their narrow bodies. Their main withdrawal was in May 1985, when the tunnel lines were singled and normal EMU stock took their place.
 | | DEMU Class 204 (31 images)
The 3T thumpers. Four reformed 3 car sets, the centre cars were actually inoperative driving trailers
 | | DEMU Class 205 (58 images)
The 3H 'Hampshire' thumpers - the most numerous DEMU class
 | | DEMU Class 207 (22 images)
The 3D units with their up to date glass fibre fronts, built for the Oxted line
 | | DEMU Class 210 (4 images)
Prototype units built in 1981 - a 3 car & a 4 car set.
 | | DMU Class 100 (11 images)
During the late 80's, these were hen's teeth. Just one remained in revenue service, along with a departmental unit.
 | | DMU Class 101 (377 images)
The Metro-Cammell built unit could be seen just about everywhere. Those aluminium window frames were instantly recognisable.
 | | DMU Class 104 (68 images)
The Birmingham RC&W first generation DMU.
 | | DMU Class 105 (59 images)
Cravens built 2 car DMU. I never did see one in blue/grey livery.
 | | DMU Class 107 (58 images)
The 107's were all based up in Scotland. On my first trips across the border, most had been stored out of service with mechanical faults. However, they returned back into service after repairs and most of the shots here are from that period.
 | | DMU Class 108 (145 images)
The Derby lightweights. Over 300 sets were built and if you were lucky, you might just see a 4 car set
 | | DMU Class 110 (37 images)
The Calder Valley units. They never really strayed from their home patch of Yorkshire.
 | | DMU Class 111 (24 images)
Basically the same as a 101, but more powerful. Some were converted to 'half motor'
 | | DMU Class 114 (93 images)

 | | DMU Class 127 (35 images)
Originally 4 car sets on the Bed-Pan services, they were redundant after electrification in 1983. Many of the trailers went to Tyseley for reuse and several power cars were converted into dedicated parcels units.
 | | DMU Class 128 (30 images)
Those rather cute little parcels units. A pity that none were to enter into preservation.
 | | DMU Class 140 (10 images)
Mate a bus body with a wagon chassis and what do you get? You can make up your own mind, but it wasn't blessed with good looks. A prototype unit that survived into preservation.
